Gentry, Rogues edge Heat to open weekend series

Jake Gentry’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the difference and relief pitcher Sebastian Boivin worked out of a bases-loaded jam to close out the Medford Rogues’ 8-7 win over the Sacramento Heat at Harry & David Field Friday night.

The win was the Rogues’ first Golden State Collegiate Baseball League home game since 2019. The Rogues didn’t play a league schedule last summer as a result of the pandemic-shortened season.

Medford’s Emiliano Alarcon singled to begin the decisive seventh inning, then moved to third on Ruben Cedillo’s double. Gentry, one of the Rogues’ hottest hitters to open the 2021 season, brought Alarcon and Cedillo home with a double to right to put Medford (8-2) ahead 8-6.

Sacramento, however, cut the deficit to one run on Payton Rios’ RBI single. Boivin then issued a walk to load the bases, but got a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to short to end the game and leave the potential tying run stranded at third.

Alarcon finished 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and hit a three-run double to left as part of the Rogues’ five-run second inning. Cedillo, who was 2-for-4 on the night, capped the early surge with an RBI single.

Rios finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Nolan Barry was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Blake Peterson also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored.
