Mustangs take tournament title with pair of wins

ROSEBURG — The Medford Mustangs offense saved some of its best work for last Sunday afternoon, getting contributions from up and down the lineup to roll to an 11-6 win over the Portland Barbers in the championship game of Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s Tournament.

To get to the championship game, the Mustangs recorded a 3-1 win over Laces Baseball Academy out of Washington.

Medford (18-2), which went unbeaten in tournament play and has won seven straight overall, used a seven-run sixth inning to pull away from Portland and go up 11-0

The Mustangs finished with 11 hits in the title game, the third time in four games they hit double digits.

Aiden Horsley finished 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Rowan Amann went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Eli Westrick, who knocked in a run during the Mustangs’ big sixth inning, was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Tanner Douglas finished with an RBI and scored three runs.

Eight of Medford’s nine starters scored at least one run against Portland.

Darin Marsh picked up the win in the title game after going five solid innings, allowing just three hits and no runs. He struck out three and walked three.

In Game 1, Mustangs starter Chase Costanti and Trey Newmann combined on a three-hitter. Costanti struck out five and allowed one run on three hits in six innings of work, while Newmann needed all of 10 pitches to close things out in the seventh for the save.

Gavin Schmidt went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, while Westrick and Marsh also knocked in runs. Schmidt’s first double of the game drove in what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the second.
