Horsley powers ’Stangs to win against Eugene
Aiden Horsley hit for three legs of the cycle to lead the Medford Mustangs to a 9-4 win over the Eugene Challengers in the first game of a doubleheader at U.S. Cellular Community Park Wednesday night.
Medford completed the sweep with a 9-6 win in Game 2 after Gavin Schmidt struckout six with one earned run in five innings and the Mustangs got a pair of RBIs each from Eli Westrick and Rowan Amann .
Horsley, who went 3-for-4 in the game, hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third for the eventual game-winning run. He also singled in the fifth and hit an RBI double in the sixth.
Cody Borraggine’s two-run double in the bottom of the second tied the game at 3-all. Moments later, Darin Marsh put the Mustangs in front with an RBI single to center.
Borraggine finished 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Marsh, Tanner Douglas, Westrick, Chase Costanti and Jeremiah Robbins all had one RBI apiece.
AJ Balsiger picked up the win for the Mustangs (20-4), going five innings and allowing four runs on five hits. Balsiger struck out eight and walked three.
Eugene leadoff man Dane Woodcook and cleanup hitter Dane Langworthy each went 2-for-4, with the former knocking in a pair of runs with a double in the top of the second.
In Game 2, Borraggine went 3-for-4 for the Mustangs with one run and one RBI. Medford also got two hits apiece from Westrick, Amann, Tanner Douglas and Josh Baptiste.

EUGENE CHALLENGERS 4-8, MEDFORD MUSTANGS 3-3: At Eugene, on Tuesday, Eugene scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break open a 3-3 contest in Game 2 and secure a sweep.
Dane Woodcook and Bryson Estella each had two hits and three RBIs for the Challengers, who made the most of six hits and were helped by four Mustang walks and two errors.
Cody Borraggine was 2-for-4 with a run for Medford, moving him to 5-for-7 for the day.
Gavin Schmidt homered and Tanner Douglas had a single and two RBIs to account for the Mustangs’ other hits.
In the first game, Medford lost despite limiting Eugene to three hits.
The Challengers took a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning after Jaxson Fraser led off with a double to left field, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Woodcook’s sacrifice fly to center.
The Mustangs closed within 4-3 after Rowan Amann was hit by a pitch and moved around the bases on two walks and a fielder’s choice. But Medford could not get another run in.
Medford had five hits, three of them by Borraggine, who also scored twice. Ian Wood and Amann had the other hits, and Douglas, Eli Westrick and Josh Baptiste drove in runs.
Douglas struck out eight batters in 4 1/3 innings but took the loss, allowing three hits and walking four. Brandon Zanni pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings, fanning three.
