Rogues see lead slip away, but still get win over Portland Gherkins
Emiliano Alarcon knocked in what proved to be the game-winning run with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Medford Rogues edged the Portland Gherkins 7-6 at Harry & David Field Saturday night.
The Rogues (15-3) were ahead 6-0 after the second inning, but couldn’t hold onto their early lead, seeing the Gherkins score six unanswered — two in the fourth and four more in the sixth — to tie the game at 6-all in the top of the sixth.
Ruben Cedillo drove in Medford’s first run with an RBI triple to bring home Jason Dumont, who reached on a Portland error. Cedillo then scored on Omar Ortiz’s fielder’s choice, beating the throw home to put the Rogues up 2-0.
Dumont then turned from run scorer to run producer an inning later, driving in Noah Sudyka with an RBI single. Jake Gentry made it 5-0 with a two-run triple, then scored the Rogues’ final run of the inning on a Gherkins error.
All of the Rogues’ four second-inning runs came with two outs.
Four of the Rogues’ six hits in the game went for extra bases, with three of them being triples.
Skyler Gaudern picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 3-0. Jack Erickson closed things out in the ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.
Medford opens a two-game series against Northwest Star Academy out of Portland at Harry & David Field on Monday night.
