Rogues hang on to edge Nighthawks

Medford took action to the wire Monday night at Harry & David Field, with the Rogues staving off a ninth-inning rally by Northwest Star Academy for a 7-5 triumph in collegiate wood-bat summer baseball play.

The two teams wrap up their two-game series at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday.

The Rogues (16-3) took a 7-3 lead into the final frame and saw relief pitcher Hunter Cope strikeout the first two batters he faced before the third out proved a little time-consuming to achieve.

After Cope hit Quadrese Teague with a pitch, Carter Monda reached on an error by third baseman Grant Sherrod to allow one run to score. Monda then stole second and third base before coming home on a wild pitch to make it 7-5.

Still not done, the Nighthawks saw Brooks Dyer and Jack Thomson each draw walks to put the tying runs on base before the 6-foot-11, Arizona-bound Cope caught Travis Helm looking on an inside pitch for the rally-ending out.

Sherrod paced Medford at the plate by going 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI, while Austin Smith was 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI in his Rogues debut and Mike LaVigne went 2-for-3.

For the Portland-area visitors, Monda finished 2-for-5 with three runs and Thomson was 2-for-4 with one run and two RBIs.

Medford tied the game at 1-all in the second inning when Smith doubled to bring home Sherrod from first base.

The Rogues built a 3-1 cushion in the fourth after back-to-back doubles by Sherrod and Jesse Brown and an RBI groundout by Carson Lydon.

After the Nighthawks tied the game in the top of the sixth at 3-all, Medford struck back with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame by batting around the lineup.

Emiliano Alarcon’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly gave the Rogues the go-ahead run, and Medford also tacked on runs with need of a hit after Noah Sudyka drew a bases-loaded walk and Jake Gentry was hit by a pitch to make it 6-3.

Despite seeing two runners thrown out trying to advance home on wild pitches in the eighth inning, the Rogues were able to scratch out another run when Sherrod singled home Gentry.
