Mustangs lose twice at Reno tourney

RENO, Nev. — As much as the second day of the Reno Knights Fourth of July Tournament was a fleeting success for the Medford Mustangs, the third day didn’t go quite the same way.

The Mustangs dropped both of their games Saturday, first losing 6-3 to the Yuba-Sutter Post 705 Stripers and then were limited to all of four hits as they were handed a 4-2 defeat to the host Reno Knights

It was only the second time this season the Mustangs (30-8) have lost back-to-back games.

Against Yuba-Sutter, Medford built a 2-0 lead on back-to-back RBI doubles by Tanner Douglas and Aiden Horsley.

Yuba-Sutter, however, scored three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth against a pair of Mustangs relief pitchers to take a 5-3 lead.

Horsley went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Rowan Amann also had a two-hit day. Eli Westrick drove in the Mustangs’ final run of the game with an RBI single to center in the fifth.

Yuba-Sutter leadoff man Ryan Bradford went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs.

Douglas threw four shutout innings and allowed two hits while striking out a pair of batters in a no decision.

In Game 2, Reno starting pitcher Eric Nachtsheim limited the Mustangs to just two runs on four hits. He finished with eight strikeouts and walked one.

Jace Miller, who was not in the original starting lineup, went 3-for-3 with a solo home run. Westrick drove in the Mustangs’ other run with a sacrifice fly to center in the sixth.

In Friday’s late game, Trey Newmann threw a two-hit shutout in five innings as the Mustangs beat the Federal Way Knights 13-0.

Newmann allowed just one hit after the top of the first. He finished with eight strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter.

The top four hitters in the Medford lineup — Cody Borraggine, Darin Marsh, Douglas and Westrick — combined to knock in nine runs. Marsh finished 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and four runs scored, while Borraggine (1-for-4), Douglas (2-for-3) and Westrick (3-for-3) all knocked in two runs.

Aiden Horsley and Josh Baptiste also had two-hit games against Federal Way.
