Rogues’ rally comes up short in loss to Elks
BEND — The Medford Rogues came close to pulling off one of their wildest comebacks of the 2021 season Wednesday night, falling just short of completing a ninth-inning rally as they fell 7-6 to the Bend Elks at Vince Genna Stadium.
Trailing 7-4 going into the top of the ninth, Jake Gentry cut the deficit to two runs with a sacrifice fly. Two batters later, Jessue Brown drove in Austin Smith on a fielder’s choice to make it 7-6. With the potential game-tying run in scoring position and the possible winning run on first, Josh Williams flied out to left to end the game.
The Rogues fell to 25-6 with the loss.
Bend led 2-0 after one inning and then scored four runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to get the lead for good.
The Rogues cut the early deficit to 2-1 in the third on Crosby Albee’s RBI single to bring in Williams.
An inning later, Medford took a 4-2 lead thanks to RBI singles by Grant Sherrod and Ruben Cedillo as well as Sherrod scoring on a throwing error by the Elks.
Smith, Cedillo and Michael LaVigne all finished 2-for-4, while Williams was 1-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Noah Sudyka also had a two-hit game and scored a run.
Rogues starting pitcher Matt Ager was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.
