Rogers wins third Big Al’s singles title
ASHLAND — Former Ashland High standout Rox Rogers clinched his third men’s open singles championship with a solid showing Sunday in the 45th Big Al’s Tennis Tournament at Ashland Tennis Fitness Club.
The top-seeded Rogers was able to fend off Austin Kische in a tight first set before closing strong for a 7-5, 6-2 win.
Rogers previously won Big Al’s singles titles in 2017 and 2018. He was a two-time Class 5A state runner-up in singles during his final two seasons as a Grizzly after winning a doubles state title as a sophomore in 2016.
Kische, from Yreka, California, had lost only five games in four sets entering Sunday’s final.
Kische and Justin Barton of Redding, California, won the men’s doubles title by default over Rogers and his father Kory to snap the locals’ string of championships that included wins in 2018 and 2019.
The Big Al’s tournament made its return this weekend after being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
