Mustangs clinch Area 4 crown; Rogues falter

It didn’t come easy Sunday afternoon, but the Medford Mustangs were able to clinch the American Legion AAA Area 4 crown with a doubleheader sweep of Roseburg at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

Medford used a seventh-inning rally to topple Dr. Stewart’s 7-6 in the opener, then saw Gavin Schmidt pitch a complete-game shutout in the nightcap to win 9-0 and finish one game ahead of Eugene for the league title.

The Mustangs finished 11-5 in Area 4 play and 41-12 to wrap up the regular season, with the Challengers at 10-6 and 41-11.

Roseburg (28-15, 9-7 Area 4) finished third, followed by Springfield (19-15, 8-8) and Grants Pass (7-26, 2-14). Klamath Falls went 8-18-1 but did not play a full Area 4 schedule.

As host of the state tournament, Roseburg had already qualified, while Medford, Eugene and Springfield also clinched postseason berths to make up half of the expected field. Tournament play begins Saturday at Legion Field.

The Mustangs faced a 6-2 deficit with one out in the bottom of the seventh in Game 1 Sunday before erupting for five runs. Cody Borraggine began the outburst with a leadoff double before consecutive singles by Tanner Douglas and Eli Westrick and a two-run triple by Aiden Horsley.

After an RBI double by Jeremiah Robbins tied the game at 6-all, Schmidt supplied a walk-off RBI double to cap the comeback.

Roseburg previously built its advantage thanks to home runs by Jett Black, Logan Klopfenstein and Spencer Six.

In Game 2, Schmidt allowed five hits with two walks and four strikeouts to propel Medford to a sweep.

The Mustangs needed only one hit, a single by Darin Marsh, to score five runs in the first inning of the nightcap.

Marsh finished 2-for-4 with one run and Robbins was 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, while Jace Miller had three RBIs and Zac Ankeny drove in two runs.
