Mustangs escape with win over Beaverton
ROSEBURG — The Medford Mustangs scored four runs in the sixth inning to rally past the Beaverton Sockeyes for a 4-1 victory in the opening game of the American Legion AAA state tournament at Legion Field.
Trailing 1-0, Cody Borraggine led off the sixth inning for the Mustangs (42-12) and advanced on a fielder’s choice that resulted in a Beaverton error. The Sockeyes (24-8) fell apart after that with consecutive errors on at-bats by Tanner Douglas and Eli Westrick that allowed the go-ahead runs to score.
Beaverton committed five errors overall to open the door for Medford, which next plays the Hillsboro Barbers at 4 p.m. today. Hillsboro (31-9) beat the Sherwood Lobos, 8-1, earlier Saturday, while Roseburg and Eugene also earned opening-round victories.
Borraggine finished with two of Medford’s three hits, with Westrick and Jeremiah Robbins credited with RBIs.
Gavin Schmidt earned the pitching victory after striking out five with one walk and five hits allowed in 6 2/3 innings. Trey Newmann came on in relief to get the final out in the bottom of the seventh with a runner on second base.
