Wild Bills silence Rogues in season finale
If the Medford Rogues were hoping to end their 2021 season with a bang, the Willamette Wild Bills’ pitching staff had other ideas.
Medford’s offense generated all of one hit in its season-ending 6-1 loss to Willamette at Harry & David Field Saturday night, as the 1-2 pitching punch of Taylor Ott and Kadyn Shelton proved too much for the Rogues.
The Rogues (33-11) didn’t have a hit through the first 7 2/3 innings before Austin Smith broke up the Wild Bills’ no-hit bid with a two-out single in the eighth off of Shelton, who pitched the final four innings in relief of Ott.
Ott threw five innings of no-hit ball, allowing one run and striking out three while walking four.
Shelton didn’t allow a run in his four innings of work and struck out one hitter.
The Rogues scored their only run in the bottom of the second after Ott walked Omar Ortiz and Ruben Cedillo, then saw the two move up on Jason Dumont’s sacrifice bunt. Crosby Albee drove in Ortiz with a sacrifice fly, cutting Willamette’s early lead to 2-1.
That proved to be all the offense the Rogues could muster.
Willamette’s Brock McMullin went 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs, while Manny Castineira and Cody Ranitt both had two hits. Castineira also scored three runs, while Ranitt had a triple, scored a run and knocked in another.
