Osuna, Magallanes team for big day at GPD
GRANTS PASS — Jockey Martin Osuna and trainer Hector Magallanes made for a great combination Sunday at Grants Pass Downs, with the duo teaming up for three victories — including two in the marquee Autumn Derby Trials — to highlight local horse racing action.
Osuna guided Tell Foose, owned by Ruben Magallanes, to the top qualifying time in the time trials for the Oct. 11 Autumn Derby, winning the fourth race in 19.680 seconds in a competition for 3-year-old quarter horses.
Sunday’s third, fourth and fifth races involved trials for the Autumn Derby, which will have a total purse of $35,000.
Osuna also rode Lionized to a win in the third race, good for seventh overall in the trials with a time of 19.895. Osuna also rode Farm Cash to a win in the opening race.
Trainer Jose Rosales Gomez wound up having three of his horses qualify for the Autumn Derby, with Skyywalker posting the second-fastest time (19.802) with Jaime Lopez aboard. Other qualifiers were Super Bowl Sunny Day (eighth, 20.011), which was ridden by Taylor Smith, and The Streakin Queen (10th, 20.071), ridden by Jose Guerrero.
Also qualifying for the 10-horse derby field were Dahock (third, 19.811), Half Interest (fourth, 19.819), Not Another Lover (fifth, 19.833), Jess Ozzy (sixth, 19.895) and One Sweet Lippy (ninth, 20.031).
Attendance on Sunday was 1,365, with an on-track handle of $24,676 and off-track of $131,059 for a total handle of $155,735.
Racing continues Monday and Tuesday night with eight-race cards. Post time is 5:15 p.m., and gates open at 4:15.
