Clubhouse Saint wins Drift Boat Stakes
GRANTS PASS — Clubhouse Saint held off Always for Money and notched a 2 1/2-length victory in the $14,900 Drift Boat Stakes for 3-year-old fillies Monday evening at Grants Pass Downs.
Ridden by Mckenzie King, Clubhouse Saint ran six furlongs in 1 minute, 11.19 seconds and paid $6.40, $3.20 and $2.60. Quinn Howey is the trainer for owner Boardshorts Stables LLC.
A California-bred by Clubhouse Ride, Clubhouse Saint is 2-for-2 at the meet and 3-0-1 in four starts since being claimed for $4,000 at Golden Gate Fields in August. Her overall record is 4-0-3 in nine starts with earnings of $30,466.
In the Drift Boat, Clubhouse Saint blew past Mean Sharon on the backstretch and then outran Always for Money as the two bay fillies dominated the race.
“(Clubhouse Saint) didn’t break well tonight and was in the pocket,” Howey said post-race. “Mckenzie did a great job of getting her in the clear. This is a nice little filly, hopefully we’ve got some more wins coming with her.”
Always for Money, ridden by Alex Anaya, was easily second best and paid $4 and $2.40, while Finished My P H D, Leonel Camacho-Flores riding, finished third and paid $2.80.
Jacomina, Rachel’s Lady, Mean Sharon, Phantoms Brook and Waterfall rounded out the order of finish. Hot August Storm was scratched.
Mean Sharon, the 2-to-1 second choice, gave way after leading up to midway on the backstretch.
Anaya rode four winners on Monday’s eight-race card, including three combined with trainer Jorge Rosales, and tops the jockey standings with seven wins.
Rosales leads the trainers’ standings with six wins.
On-track attendance was 425 and the total mutuel handle was $450,857.
NOTES: Xtrafine Xtina ($8.20) captured Monday’s $8,300 allowance test for fillies and mares, leading gate to wire under James Wooten Jr. in 58.94 for five furlongs. Just Classy finished second while 3-to-2 favorite Miss Important finished third — her first loss in five career starts at Grants Pass Downs. . .Raiderette ($8) and Cosmic Tripster ($46.20) each won divisions of Leg No. 1 of the OHBPA Fillies and Mares Sprints Series. . . Licorice Drop Pops ($7.40) became a double winner at the meet with an off the pace victory in race three, and Brett ($3) scored his second win of the meet with a gate to wire triumph in race eight. . .Live racing action continues Tuesday with a 10-race program at 5:15 p.m.
