June Gloom claims Jetboat Stakes at GPD

GRANTS PASS — June Gloom took the early lead and cruised to a sharp five-length victory over stable mate Equivocator in Tuesday’s $14,300 Jetboat Stakes for 3-year-olds at Grants Pass Downs.

Ridden by Mckenzie King, June Gloom covered six furlongs in 1 minute, 10.81 seconds and paid $2.40 as the odds-on choice in the field of five. Quinn Howey is the winning trainer for owner Boardshorts Stables LLC.

June Gloom took control early, wresting control from Lt. Bullitt before the first turn, opening a clear lead while setting fractions of 22.85, 45.99 and 58.10 seconds. She entered the home stretch with a three-length cushion and coasted unchallenged to the wire.

A California-bred by Boisterous, June Gloom earned $7,865 to boost her career mark to $37,125. She has a 4-3-1 record from 11 lifetime starts.

June Gloom’s victory marked the second stakes win in 24 hours for the combination of King, Howey and Boardshorts Stables. And just like with Clubhouse Saint in Monday’s $14,900 Drift Boat Stakes, June Gloom was acquired via the claim box; he was haltered for $5,000 at Ferndale on August 27.

King said the plan was to stalk Lt. Bullitt early but scrapped that idea when June Gloom made the lead so easily.

“It played out really well,” she said. “I love (Grants Pass), I’ve been coming here since I was a little girl. And now, to ride here and win races is great.”

King was the lone jockey with two wins Tuesday.

Equivocator, ridden by Taylor Smith, rallied to finish second and complete the exacta for the Howey barn. Lt. Bullitt, A Gem Is a Gem and Blue Sunset completed the order of finish. Mean Sharon was scratched.

On-track attendance was 330 and the total mutuel handle was $510,232.

The final two races of the scheduled 10-race card were canceled due to unsafe track conditions caused by rainy weather. The cancellation was a joint decision by track management and the jockeys.

NOTES: Foolish to Deceive ($6.20), Tristram Speaker ($6), and Fort Lewis Rivers ($8.20) all won divisions of Tuesday’s Leg No. 1 of the OHBPA Open Sprint Series for 3-year-olds and up. . .In addition to winning the Jet Boat Stakes with June Gloom, trainer Quinn Howey also won race six with Tristram Speaker and race seven with Preacher Brown ($8). . .
