B the One wins Far West Futurity at GPD
GRANTS PASS — B the One outfinished Leaving Angelz and scored a half-length victory in Monday’s $83,000 Far West Futurity for 2-year-olds at Grants Pass Downs.
A 4-to-5 betting favorite ridden by Cesar Moreno at 125 pounds, B the One ran 400 yards in 20.420 seconds on a good track, and paid $3.80, $2.80 and $2.60.
Trained by Jose Rosales-Gomez, owned by CB Stables (Abel Gonzalez) and bred by Randy and Stacy Hill, B the One is an Oklahoma-bred colt by Five Bar Cartel.
Breaking from the far outside post-position, B the One engaged Leaving Angelz throughout the race, and the two favorites raced side by side to the wire with B the One proving best.
The eighth fastest of 10 qualifiers on Oct. 17, B the One put it all together Monday evening and is 4-1-0 in eight lifetime starts with earnings of $60,370, including $33,200 for Monday’s triumph.
“He hopped at the break in the trials, and he kind of did the same thing tonight,” Rosales-Gomez said. “But he finishes strongly and he’s improving.”
Rosales-Gomez said a race at Turf Paradise could be next for B the one, assuming the colt comes out of the Far West Futurity in good shape.
Leaving Anglez, the 3-to-1 second choice ridden by Martin Osuna, paid $3.80 and $3.40. A 2-year-old Oregon-bred by Coronas Leaving You, Leaving Angelz earned $14,110 and is 4-3-0 in eight career starts with total earnings of $42,139.
Five Bar Cali, ridden by Jaime Lopez, was a half-length back in third and paid $3.60 to show. Cm Rosie At Ta Bar, One Dashing Rabbit, L Bar D Mistr Cartel, Hell On Horseshoes, The Streakin Dream, and Uncle Shine rounded out the complete order of finish. Playin the Game was scratched.
Monday’s program also featured the $15,000 Far West Futurity consolation race for horses that did not qualify for the Far West Futurity, with Jm Who Knew edging Im Perky by a neck in 20.6698 seconds for 400 yards.
Ridden by Jaime Lopez at 125 pounds, Jm Who Knew paid $5.60 as the second choice in the wagering. Danny Montes is the trainer for winning owner Jorge Carmona of Mira Loma, Calif.
A 2-year-old Oklahoma-bred filly by One Dashing Eagle, Jm Who Knew is 3-0-1 in eight lifetime starts with $17,940 in purse earnings. Monday’s victory was worth $7,500.
Im Perky finished second while Senorita Frogs, the 3 to 2 favorite, raced erratically and settled for third place.
On-track attendance Monday was 415 with a total mutuel handle of $382,857.
Sunday marked the return of Oregon Championship Day with four key stakes races.
El Maestro, ridden by Leonel Camacho-Flores, won the $16,400 Thongs Fancy Stakes; Dahock, ridden by LF Gonzalez, won the $20,000 Memorial Stakes; Azee Rules, ridden by Taylor Smith, won the $16,400 Don Jackson Stakes; and Jacomina, ridden by Alex Anaya, won the $15,800 Polynesian Flyer Stakes.
NOTES: After Taylor Smith joined fellow jockey Joree Scriver, who accomplished the feat last week, in notching 100 career wins with her efforts Sunday, Smith rode three more winners Monday ... Alex Anaya rode two winners and owns a 22-12 lead over Leonel Camacho-Flores atop the jockeys’ standings ... Trainer Tim Abraham was 2-for-2 with long shot winners Pasco ($28) and Papa’s Honey ($29.60) ... Jorge Rosales also had two wins and trails Quinn Howey by one win, 15-14, in the trainers’ race ...
