Crabs stifle Rogues bats in series-opening loss

Back on the field for the first time in four days, the Medford Rogues’ bats couldn’t replicate the offensive totals from their first two games of the 2022 season in a 7-2 loss to the Humboldt Crabs at Harry & David Field Tuesday night.

The Rogues (1-2) recorded a combined 26 hits in their first two games of the season against the Seattle Studs, but three Crabs pitchers limited Medford to a season-low six hits.

Crabs starter Marcelo Saldana, out of CSU Bakersfield, allowed just two hits over five shutout innings — a pair of singles, one each to Trey Nelson and Tyler Peterson. He struck out two batters, issued one walk and needed just 64 pitches to get through his five innings of work.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the seventh that the Rogues broke up the Crabs’ shutout bid on Emiliano Alarcon’s two-out RBI single to left against relief pitcher Garrison Finck.

Humboldt (2-0) — which saw two of its three season-opening games rained out last weekend — took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third against Medford starting pitcher Adam Shew on Colby Lunsford’s RBI single to right and Tyler Davis’ sacrifice fly to center.

Davis pushed Humboldt’s lead to 3-0 with an RBI single to center in the top of the fifth, then reached on an error that allowed Cary Arbolida to score two innings later.

Arbolida nearly outhit the Rogues on his own, going 4-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Lunsford went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Davis finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs.

Humboldt’s Andrew Esperanza, who went 2-for-5, added a solo home run in the top of the ninth.

Shew, who pitched a scoreless ninth to get the save in Friday night’s comeback win over the Studs, went 3 2/3 innings in his first start of the summer. He allowed five hits and two runs and struck out five.

Medford’s Tyler Peterson finished 2-for-4, while Cole Arnold and Barron Zamora each scored a run.

The Rogues and Crabs wrap up their two-game midweek series Wednesday night with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch at Harry & David.
