Mustangs score fifth straight win; Rogues romp

Medford batted through its lineup in the first inning to take full control Tuesday and post a fifth straight victory with a 10-2 triumph over the visiting Fairfield Expos at North Medford High.

The Mustangs (10-2) scored five runs in the first and saw a trio of pitchers limit Fairfield (35-9) to six hits in the American Legion AAA baseball contest.

“That was nice to get out there to a lead,” said Mustangs manager Nate Mayben. “It’s a game when you come in knowing you’re going to throw three guys so it’s nice to jump out early to get some comfort in making some of those moves.”

Cody Borraggine and Cameron Sewell drew consecutive walks and scored soon thereafter following an RBI single by Tanner Douglas and RBI double from Jace Miller. Douglas scored on a balk and Miller later scored on a double by Aiden Horsley, who tallied the fifth run on a sacrifice fly by Owen Thompson.

Miller tacked on another RBI in the second to make it 6-0 and Triston Wallace doubled and scored on a single by Johnny King in the fifth to answer a Fairfield run in the top of the frame.

Medford closed out its scoring with a three-run sixth inning, highlighted by a triple from Miller and two-run single by Kaleb Long.

On the mound, Frankie Rutigliano allowed only two hits with three strikeouts and one walk in three innings to pick up the victory. Horsley allowed three hits and one run with two strikeouts in two innings of relief, and King closed the game allowing only a solo home run by Fairfield’s Aaron Strong.

“We’ve done a great job of not giving up free bases,” Mayben said of his pitchers this summer. “They were just throwing strikes and competing in the zone and letting our defense work. Our defense has been pretty spectacular these past five or six games.”

MEDFORD ROGUES 11, NORTHWEST STAR ACADEMY 1, 7 inn.: Eamon Velarde pitched five perfect innings with five strikeouts and Barron Zamora connected for a two-run home run during a seven-run third inning as Medford scored a mercy-rule victory at Harry & David Field.

Zamora finished 2-for-4 with one run and three RBIs, while Logan Drummond went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI and CJ Colyer provided a lift in his debut with the Rogues by going 3-for-4 with two runs. Colyer joined Medford on Monday night after starting the season with the Bend Elks.

Medford improved to 8-6-1 heading into Wednesday’s series finale against Northwest Star Academy.

The two teams, in effect, played to a 3-3 draw on Monday in a game that was settled by a home run derby instead of playing extra innings. Northwest Star Academy hit one homer in the exhibition and Medford, which was 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and 0-for-6 with a runner at third base, had none.

Tyler Howard and Alex Sol had doubles for the visiting team’s lone hits over the final two innings.
