Lopez rides Warhock to MT Handicap win

GRANTS PASS — Jockey Jaime Lopez picked up three victories Monday, highlighted by his feature-race win in the Mail Tribune Handicap, to lead all challengers at Grants Pass Downs.

Lopez was aboard Warhock in the 350-yard race for quarter horses in the $16,600 Mail Tribune Handicap, guiding the 7-year-old gelding to a win by a head over Cm Boom Shakalaka in 17.33 seconds during the sixth of eight races Monday.

Warhock is trained by Benito Curiel, who joined trainer Teri Beckner with two wins on the day, and owned by Malon Cowgill.

Lopez also scored wins in the fourth and eighth races aboard Jesstafiably Jess and Cm Once Ina Bluemoon, respectively.

Monday’s attendance of 405 was hindered a bit by recent heat concerns, with the handle at $11,880.

Racing was set to continue Tuesday night as the Grants Pass Downs summer meet enters its final stages, with the final days of racing scheduled Sunday and Monday with 1 p.m. post times.

The Fourth of July finale will be highlighted by the Firecracker Futurity, which held a $90,000 purse last year.
