Smith posts career night at GP Downs

GRANTS PASS — Taylor Smith enjoyed a career night Tuesday, posting five wins to move into first place in the jockey standings during the summer meet at Grants Pass Downs.

Smith was the winning jockey in the second (Fierce Heart), fourth (Senorita Frogs), fifth (Luke’s Place), seventh (Bethel Ridge) and eighth races (Hey Wilmaaa) late Tuesday, eclipsing her previous best effort of four wins during a meet in Prineville.

Tuesday’s showing allowed Smith to double her win total at GPD. Smith’s 29% win percentage and 10 total wins puts her atop the jockey standings to go with four runner-up finishes and five third-place rides.

Jose Guerrero and Jose Figueroa each have seven wins to stand tied for second entering the final weekend at GPD.

Figueroa picked up two of those wins Tuesday in the first and sixth races for owner/trainer Teri Beckner. Smith’s final win Tuesday was for another Beckner horse, making Beckner the meet’s leading trainer thus far with eight victories in 16 starts.

Beckner is also the leading owner with seven wins in 13 starts and $30,115 in purses.

Tuesday’s attendance was 560 with a handle of $14,618.

The summer meet wraps up with racing Sunday and Monday at Grants Pass Downs. Post times each day will be 1 p.m.

Sunday is Ladies Hat Day, with free admission for women wearing a hat (baseball hats excluded). The feature race Sunday will be the Rogue River Derby, which involves a $25,000 purse.

Monday marks Fan Appreciation Day and the highlight of the season finale will be the Firecracker Futurity. This year’s purse stands at $88,000.
