Rogues hold off Storm for second straight win

Medford’s Trey Nelson and Tyler Peterson had fifth-inning RBIs to help the Rogues break a 4-all tie and go on to claim a 6-4 win over the South Bay Storm at Harry & David Field Saturday night.

The Rogues (15-11-1) led 3-0 after the opening inning but saw the Storm rally to tie the game in the top of the fifth.

Medford got singles from Reece MacRae and CJ Colyer to put runners at the corners to open the bottom of the fifth. Nelson drove in MacRae with a sacrifice fly to left field to put the Rogues back in front 5-4. Two batters later, Colyer scored on Peterson’s groundout to first base that doubled the Rouges’ lead.

The Medford bullpen closed the door the final four innings, as a pair of relievers — Sebastian Boivin and Jake Liberta — combined to throw four shutout innings after the Rogues re-took the lead. Liberta pitched the final three innings to get the save, striking out six and walking one.

Emiliano Alarcon was 3-for-5 with an RBI, a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fourth to put Medford ahead 4-2. MacRae and Colyer both had two-hit nights. Grayson Grinsell and Colyer also had RBIs, while Peterson scored a pair of runs.

On Friday night, the Rogues recorded a season-high 19 hits and opened the weekend series with a 13-6 win. Medford scored at least one run in five of the first six innings, including two in the first and four more in the third to take an early 6-2 lead.

Barron Zamora went 4-for-6 with an RBI and two runs, while Alarcon was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Five different Rogues batters — Cole Arnold, Nelson, Grinsell, Colyer and MacRae — had two-hit games, with Colyer driving in four runs. Grinsell had two RBIs, while Arnold, Nelson and MacRae each recorded an RBI.

Rogues starting pitcher Eamon Velarde picked up the win, allowing four runs on six hits over five innings of work. He had a strikeout and two walks.
