Grewe sets tone in Rogues romp
The Medford Rogues pitching staff continued its strong surge to the finish late Wednesday night, with David Grewe turning in one of his best performances of the summer to pave the way for an 8-2 victory over the visiting Redding Colt 45s at Harry & David Field.
Grewe, a sophomore-to-be at Oregon State, pitched five shutout innings with only one hit allowed. The 6-foot-2 right-hander struck out five and walked two on 72 pitches.
To close things out, Jacob Liberta allowed one hit with four strikeouts in two scoreless innings of relief, and Grayson Grinsell continued his strong work with three strikeouts in the ninth.
In his last four relief appearances, the Oregon-bound Grinsell has posted 18 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings and allowed only one hit with two walks. The 6-2 left-hander earned two saves during that span.
Medford (22-16-1) broke out early with a two-run single in the second inning by Cole Arnold, then tacked on two more runs in the third to build a 4-0 lead.
Ben Pajak doubled his home run total for the summer with two solo home runs for the Rogues. Pajak connected for home runs with one out in the fourth and eighth innings.
Reece MacRae also plated two runs for the Rogues, while Emiliano Alarcon went 2-for-4 with two runs and Grinsell was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Blake Tweedt hit a two-run home run in the sixth for Redding’s lone runs.
The Rogues were set to open their final homestand of the summer at 7:05 p.m. Thursday night against TKB Baseball, with 7:35 p.m. starts slated Friday and Saturday nights to offset the heat wave being experienced here in Southern Oregon.
Gates will open at 5 p.m. Friday to accommodate a Home Run Derby planned by the Rogues at 5:30. Friday night also will feature a 10th-year anniversary jersey auction.
