New COVID-19 cases push Jackson County past 500 mark Thursday

Jackson County Public Health reported 15 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday, pushing the local case total to 514 since the pandemic began.

A majority of recent local cases have come from the 97501 ZIP code (west Medford). As of Wednesday, Aug. 12, the number of cases from that ZIP code had nearly doubled over the previous two weeks, rising from 81 July 29 to 156 Aug. 12. The 97504 ZIP code (east Medford), has seen the second-largest increase in that time frame, increasing from 54 July 29 to 85 Aug. 12.

Oregon reported 294 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday, bringing Oregon’s total to 22,300, according to the Oregon Health Authority. Eight more Oregonians died from the illness, raising the state’s death toll to 383.

In Jackson County, 157 people are considered infectious, according to county health promotion program manager Tanya Phillips. There have been 44 local hospitalizations from the illness and two deaths.
