Man arrested on gun charges in roommate dispute
A Medford man was arrested early Wednesday for allegedly putting a gun in his roommate's mouth during a dispute about a computer, police said.
Medford police were called to the home in the 900 block of Mount Pitt Street between South Peach Street and Columbus Avenue at around 2 a.m. The first officer on the scene looked through a window and saw Ian Garrett Cunningham, 24, had pinned his roommate to the floor and was holding a handgun in his mouth, Medford police Lt. Tim George said.
The roommate, Johnny R. Bishop, received minor injuries during the fight. During the struggle a shot was fired into the floor shortly after an additional officer arrived.
Cunningham reportedly fired a shotgun in the rear of the home, George said.
A statement made by Cunningham pointed to an argument over a computer sparking the potentially deadly situation.
"(Cunningham) told us that his roommate had downloaded child pornography onto his computer," George said.
Police, however, found no evidence to support that claim, he said.
Cunningham left the home and was taken into custody without incident soon after police arrived.
Cunningham was charged with three counts of menacing, three counts of strangulation, fourth-degree assault, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and harassment. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail, where he remained late Wednesday on $25,000 bail.
"Any time guns are involved you have a dangerous situation," George said. "We're just glad no one was hurt here."
