Homeless man jailed in Sunday morning stabbing

A homeless man remained in jail Monday on allegations that he stabbed a 22-year-old Medford man numerous times Sunday morning.

Medford police arrested Luciano Miguel Florez, 24, on a charge of second-degree assault near the 1500 block of West Main Street. Mauricio Herrera, of the 2100 block of Brookhurst Avenue, was treated at Rogue Valley Medical Center for stab wounds and slashes to his head, neck, back and arm, officers reported. Herrera was released from the hospital Sunday.

Investigators said they believe the 2:04 a.m. attack may have originated in a dispute over a woman that both Florez and Herrera knew. Police were called to the front yard of a home in the first block of Myers Court, where they located the injured Herrera, and after a search, found Florez hiding in a nearby backyard.

Florez remained in the Jackson County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail.
