Medford man dies in Table Rock fall

A 22-year-old Medford man died Saturday evening after falling off an embankment on Upper Table Rock while hiking with his brother, officials said.

Steven Casey Bouknight, of the 900 block of Winchester Street, apparently slipped on some rocks and tumbled off the embankment landing on his head and neck, Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters said.

"He fell at least 50 feet, too far for our rescue teams to hike down there to retrieve the body," Winters said.

Rescue personnel staged on the Upper Table Rock parking lot on Modoc Road. Three search helicopters circled overhead as rescue workers began hiking up a trail leading to Bouknight's body. A helicopter was used to remove Bouknight from the bottom of the embankment at around 9 p.m., Winters said.

The body was turned over the medical examiner, who will determine the exact cause of death. The results will be released at a later date, Winters said. Bouknight's family was notified of his death Saturday night, Winters said.

Rescue workers from Jackson County Fire District 3's High Angle Rescue Team were assisted by Jackson County search and rescue teams and Mercy Flights crews, Winters said.
