Police name man shot by officers
State police have named the man whom Josephine County sheriff's deputies shot and killed in a standoff early Saturday.
Paul Harrison Chesser, 66, had repeatedly pointed his handgun at deputies and ignored orders to surrender the weapon, state police said.
The names of the four deputies involved in the shooting are expected to be released Tuesday after detectives finish interviewing them as a part of a investigation into the incident. All four have been put on administrative leave pending the outcome of the probe.
The deputies responded to a call at about 2 a.m. Saturday at a residence at 28351 Redwood Highway where Chesser allegedly fired shots and threatened others during a drunken argument between multiple people.
The deputies confronted Chesser and ordered him to put down his gun. Chesser allegedly ignored their orders and pointed the weapon at the officers several times before gun fire was exchanged.
Chesser was pronounced dead at the scene.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Oregon State Police Detective Tom Harrison at 541-776-6114, Ext. 236.
