Man fails to rob store, caught at nearby bank

GRANTS PASS — A man tried to rob an auto parts store Thursday but didn't get any money, so he hit up a nearby bank and was promptly arrested by police in the area investigating the first incident.

Grants Pass police went to the Auto Zone store at 1601 Williams Highway when a robbery was reported there at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, a police news release said. The robber, who claimed he had a bomb and that his children would be killed if the clerk didn't comply with his demand for cash, ran from the store without getting any money, police said.

Police were searching the area for the suspect when a robbery report came from the Umpqua Bank at 1040 Rogue River Highway at 9:51 a.m. The robber again claimed to have a bomb and that his children would be killed, then left with an undisclosed amount of cash. Officers arrived at the bank "within seconds" and were able to arrest the suspect, Danny L. Jones, 26, police said.

They linked him to both robberies and charged him with second-degree robbery, second-degree theft by extortion, attempted second-degree robbery, attempted theft by extortion, second-degree criminal mischief and menacing. He remained at the Josephine County Jail Friday on $100,000 bail.
