Crews clean up 50 gallons of oil spilled into Bear Creek

Cleaning crews worked Tuesday afternoon to contain around 50 gallons of oil that leaked into Bear Creek just behind Lithia Motors in Medford.

Medford Fire Chief Ken Goodson said the oil leaked from a container used for storing used engine oil from the railroad.

In all, 150 gallons poured onto the ground, but only around 50 gallons made it into a storm drain that fed into Bear Creek.

"We arrived early and were able to drop some absorbent on it before too much poured into the creek," Goodson said.

West State Environmental and Medford Public Works took over the clean-up duties. They remained on the scene late into the evening, Goodson said.

The extent of the environmental damage was unknown, Goodson said.

"It wasn't a major spill," Goodson said. "It was pretty much contained to that single storm drain."
