Medford man hit, in critical condition
A Medford man remains in critical condition after he was struck by an intoxicated driver near Mr. Smith's bar on East Jackson Street late Friday, police said.
Geoffrey Fennell, 25, was in the crosswalk at Riverside Avenue and Jackson Street at about 11 p.m. when the car struck him and his girlfriend, witnesses said.
Fennell's head hit the windshield, causing severe damage.
Billie Higginbotham, a manager at Mr. Smith's, said Fennell had just left the bar and was heading home with his girlfriend.
"We've never had anything like this happen before," she said. "He was doing the right thing by walking her home and this happened."
Witnesses at the scene tried to help Fennell by applying pressure to his head wounds, Higganbotham said.
"It was very traumatic for everyone," she said.
Fennell was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition late Saturday, according to hospital officials.
Medford police arrested the driver Eva Irene Fallon, 51, on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants and a parole violation. She was lodged in the Jackson County Jail, where she remained late Saturday in lieu of $4,000 bail.
Fennell's girlfriend received only minor injuries, Higginbotham said.
