Man charged in multiple break-ins

A Medford man faces multiple burglary charges for reportedly breaking into four Jackson County homes over the past year, police said.

Corey Michael Canty, 29, was arrested Thursday after Jackson County sheriff's detectives found stolen property in his home in the first block of North Oakdale Drive last weekend.

"Canty broke into these homes while the occupants slept inside," said Jackson County sheriff's Detective Sgt. Colin Fagan. "Two residents awoke and found him inside their home wearing a ski mask."

Canty, who is a registered sex offender, is also suspected of identity theft, after he was videotaped using stolen debit cards at several local stores, Fagan said.

The burglaries occurred between November 2007 and January 2008. He hit homes on Castle Terrace in Gold Hill, Kane Creek and Old Military Road in Central Point and Laurel Crest Drive in Medford, police said.

In addition, he is suspected in several car break-ins throughout the county.

Canty was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on charges of first-degree burglary, identity theft, second-degree burglary, first-degree forgery, first-degree theft and a parole violation. He remained jailed late Thursday without bail.

Additional charges against Canty are pending, Fagan said.
