Burned corpse found near Ashland's Lithia Park
ASHLAND — Police here are investigating the circumstances surrounding the burned body of a man found Tuesday morning near Lithia Park.
Just before 10 a.m. a passer-by who discovered the body led an Ashland police officer to a remote campsite at the top of Granite Street, an area known as the upper Granite Pit, where they found the body of a white male adult that had been burned, police said.
The body, which was sitting in the open, was not identified Tuesday. It appeared to have been at the spot above the park for an extended period of time, police said.
The body was turned over to a Jackson County medical examiner. More details will be released after an autopsy, which will determine the time and exact cause of death, police said.
The case is being treated as a "suspicious death" until further information is developed, police said.
Ashland police are being assisted in the investigation by officials from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and Oregon State Police.
