Police find man they say hit driver in bout of road rage

Medford police have found and cited a man suspected of hitting another driver in the face with a walking stick during a road rage clash Monday afternoon.

Tips poured in after police released information about an attack in the 700 block of Cardley Avenue by a driver who was described as looking like a mountain man, Medford police Lt. Tim Doney said.

Detectives found the turquoise Chevy truck involved in the clash and connected it to driver Tommy Wayne Thompson, a 61-year-old man also known as Sun-nee Wildhorse McCloud. Thompson lives in the 1300 block of Poplar Drive, but was found at a home in White City, Doney said.

He was cited and released on a third-degree assault charge.

Police said a 48-year-old Medford man reported that a driver in a pickup waved him down. When he stopped, the bearded man, whom he described to police as "wild-eyed," approached while shouting unintelligibly and hit him several times in the face with a walking stick, knocking out some teeth.

Doney said the disagreement was sparked by a driving complaint, but the situation might have been exacerbated by a medical problem.
