Man killed while trying to tow vehicle identified

The Jackson County medical examiner's office has released the name of the man who died after being hit by a car while he tried to tow a disabled vehicle out of a ditch along West Evans Creek Road Wednesday night.

Dale D. Johnson, 54, of Grants Pass, died from blunt force injuries caused by the crash. He died at Three Rivers Community Hospital about three hours after the crash, which happened around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Johnson was working with Larry Gordon, 46, and Holly Gordon, 37, both of Rogue River, to tow a red 1992 Thunderbird that had run out of gas in the 8800 block of West Evans Creek Road. The Thunderbird and a blue 1993 Jeep towing it were pointed north in the southbound lanes.

Two southbound vehicles struck the Thunderbird and Johnson and Larry Gordon, who were working on the tow chain.

Gordon is in fair condition at Rogue Valley Medical Center, and Holly Gordon, who was in the Thunderbird, was treated and released. The other two drivers weren't injured.

The crash is still under investigation by an interagency crash team that includes members from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Oregon State Police and Medford police.

The case will be reviewed by the Jackson County District Attorney's office upon completion, but the sheriff's department said no charges or citations were expected.
