FATAL CRASH IN PHOENIX
PHOENIX —A Medford-area man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a nearly head-on crash on Fern Valley Road in Phoenix.
The man's identity was withheld by police pending next of kin notification. Police found the man's identification, which listed an address near Medford.
The deceased was driving a red Jeep Cherokee east on Fern Valley Road when it collided nearly head-on with a gray Jeep Cherokee turning south onto Luman Road shortly before 4 p.m., Phoenix police Lt. Derek Bowker said.
"Witnesses behind the cars said they were moving around 25 mph when the crash occurred," Bowker said.
The driver of the red Jeep was declared dead at the scene of the crash, while the other driver was rushed to a local hospital by ambulance. He is a Medford resident, Bowker said.
The collision left the intersection strewn with wreckage. The front ends of both vehicles were heavily damaged.
Traffic moved along Fern Valley Road and out of the adjacent shopping center, although police restricted some lanes and closed Luman Road. An officer directed traffic around the crash site allowing long lines of cars to filter steadily through the intersection.
Bowker said the fresh rain that fell earlier in the afternoon may have contributed to the crash.
"When we get fresh rain it sometimes brings out the oils in the road making for slick conditions," Bowker added. "We always caution drivers to slow down in the rain."
Police from Phoenix, Talent and Medford worked at the scene, along with a Jackson County medical examiner and Jackson County Fire District No. 5 crews.
A crash investigation team worked late into the evening reconstructing the collision.
