California man arrested in death of toddler
MEDFORD — A 23-year-old California man is in jail in Jackson County, awaiting extradition after Oregon authorities arrested him in connection with the death of a 3-year-old boy.
Police in Sacramento say Joseph Skates is suspected of causing the major head trauma that led to Manuel Maciel's death last month. Skates lived with the boy's mother at the time.
California authorities learned of the toddler's injuries Nov. 7 after they stopped a vehicle that was being driven erratically. The toddler's grandmother was in the car and told the California Highway Patrol officer she was heading to a medical emergency.
The officer followed the car to an apartment where the injured child was. The boy was taken to UC Davis Medical Center where he died from his injuries, officials said.
Jackson County sheriff's deputies arrested Skates in Medford Wednesday on a California warrant charging him with homicide.
