OSP traffic stop nets 31 pounds of cocaine

Two men could face federal drug charges after Oregon State Police found about 31 pounds of cocaine in their vehicle during a traffic stop on Interstate 5 just south of Canyonville.

Troopers arrested Juan Manuel Jesus Lucero, 19, of Palmdale, Calif., and passenger Ray Gaytan Cuadras, 26, no address listed, Friday on charges of possession, manufacture and delivery of cocaine.

The case has since been turned over to Drug Enforcement Administration agents for further investigation and consideration of federal charges, OSP reported.

About two miles south of Canyonville at about 7 a.m. Friday, an OSP senior trooper stopped a 1998 Ford Explorer displaying a Washington license plate for following too close and a vehicle license violation. Lucero was driving the vehicle.

In a search during the stop, officers found 14 one-kilo packages of cocaine hidden in the SUV. The seized cocaine had an estimated value of $450,000.
