Shady Cove resident, cats escape mobile home blaze
Fire consumed a single-wide mobile home in Shady Cove Tuesday morning, but the resident and his cats escaped safely.
Jackson County Fire District No. 4 crews were called to Country View Mobile Estates at 23611 Highway 62 at about 6:15 a.m.
The first caller initially reported an explosion, but firefighters found a mobile home engulfed in flames, said Capt. Eric Mattson, a volunteer with the department.
The man who lived in the home suffered some smoke inhalation as he tried to get his cats out of the burning house, Mattson said.
The man, whose name wasn't available, was taken to Providence Medford Medical Center to be checked. After the fire was put out, the cats roamed the scene looking for breakfast, Mattson said.
District 4 Chief Bob Miller said the cause was under investigation and he hoped to interview the man who lived at the house later.
Crews from District 4 and Jackson County Fire District No. 3 put out the fire quickly. Oregon Department of Forestry crews also responded to make sure no grass fires started from the blaze. The mobile home was a total loss.
