Firefighters tamed a wind-fueled fire at Biomass One in White City after embers jumped from a five-story-high sawdust mound into four warehouse buildings, igniting sawdust and causing small fires inside. The fires were extinguished quickly, causing little damage.
The blaze was reported at 6:34 p.m. Sunday at the biomass facility located on Avenue G and was under control about 45 minutes later, said Arlen Blenkush, Jackson County Fire District 3 battalion chief. About a dozen fire engines from District 3, Medford Fire Department and the Oregon Department of Forestry responded to the scene. Fires are a regular occurrence at the facility, but staff members are usually able to smother them with bulldozers without the fire department's help, Blenkush said.
