Fire chars Medford duplex; no injuries
A fire of an unknown cause early Saturday destroyed half of a two-story duplex on Bessie Street behind Quality Market on Medford's west side, according to the Medford Fire Department.
No one was injured in the fire that erupted just past midnight Saturday, said Medford Fire Battalion Chief Brian Fish.
Firefighters arrived at the scene about four minutes after the emergency was called into 9-1-1, Fish said. It took about 45 minutes to extinguish the blaze, he said.
"The one side was pretty well gone," Fish said. "There were holes in the floor."
A house-sitter and some pet dogs evacuated the surviving half of the duplex at 314 Bessie St., which had smoke and water damage, Fish said. The male tenant of the side that was destroyed was not at home at the time and could not immediately be located, he said.
Crews were mopping up until 2:30 a.m., and a fire investigator remained on the scene throughout the night.
The fire remained under investigation Sunday. The cause and monetary value of the damage has yet to be determined.
