Van seized for suspected link to Medford robbery

MEDFORD — Police have seized a blue-green Ford Aerostar van suspected of being linked to a robbery at a west Medford store earlier this month and are looking for additional information about the vehicle.

At about noon on Oct. 2, four robbers, some with handguns, tied up a clerk and three customers at Creaciones La Muneca, a clothing store at 1712 W. Main St., then fled with a trash bag filled with jewelry. The men drove off in a mid-90s Ford van that had been parked in front of the store, police said.

Within an hour, a patrol officer spotted a green 1994 Ford Aerostar van, which matched the description, parked near an apartment building in the 500 block of Western Avenue, Medford police Detective Sgt. Mike Budreau said. Police seized the van and contacted the owner.

The registered owner told officers that he had sold the van two days earlier to a Hispanic man who had paid him about $700 cash and asked him to get new tags for the vehicle, which had expired plates. The man took the van and said he would be back the next day, Oct. 1, to get the title and tags. However, he never returned, the seller told police.

A forensic team examined the van to collect evidence, and police waited to see if the new owner would come forward to claim the van or to report it missing. No claims were made, though, police said.

Budreau said investigators aren't certain the van is connected to the robbery, but the coincidences are suspicious.

"If there is another explanation, we would like to know," he said.

Anyone with information about the van can call detectives at 774-2230.
