Homeless dead man found with thousands of dollars on him

An 85-year-old homeless man was found dead early Monday in north Medford with several thousand dollars of cash in a pouch strapped to his body, Medford police said today.

The man was found surrounded by his personal belongings by an employee of Advantage Staffing Inc. at about 7:30 a.m. outside a building at 2770 Biddle Road, near Knutson Avenue.

In the course of the investigation, police found several thousand dollars of cash secured to the body. The man's name has not been released pending notification of his family, said Medford police Detective Sgt. Mike Budreau.

"He had plenty of money to put a roof over his head," he said. "Why he didn't is everybody's question."

Budreau said officers had seen the man on the streets for several years.

Police said the cause of the man's death appears to have been heart failure and cold. Temperatures dropped to about 30 degrees the night before, Budreau said.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday.
