Rocky Point man is killed in Highway 140 car crash

An 82-year-old Rocky Point man died Saturday when he lost control of his vehicle on Highway 140 near the Lake of the Woods and crashed into a large tree, according to Oregon State Police.

Joe Lenox Stone, from the Rocky Point area west of Klamath Falls, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He had been driving eastbound on Highway 140 in icy conditions at about 1:30 p.m. when he lost control of his vehicle and spun off the roadway into a large tree, police said.

Stone was using a seat belt at the time of his death.

OSP troopers from the Klamath Falls area command office were continuing the investigation late Saturday. Speed and the icy conditions may have contributed to the accident, police said.

The Oregon Department of Transportation and Harriman Rural Fire Protection District assisted at the scene.
