Troopers discover 7 pounds of heroin in I-5 traffic stop

Oregon State Police seized 7 pounds of heroin Thursday during a traffic stop on Interstate 5 near Ashland, officials said. OSP troopers stopped a 2002 Nissan Altima with Washington plates in the northbound lanes near milepost 4.

The troopers called in a drug dog, which turned up the heroin hidden inside a box. The estimated value of the heroin is $300,000, OSP said in a news release.

Arrested were Francisco Javier Velasquez, 25, of El Monte, Calif., and his passenger Uziel Surizaday Torres, 30, from Mountlake Terrace, Wash. A third passenger was identified as a 23-year-old woman from California. She was not charged.

Velasquez and Torres were lodged in the Jackson County Jail on charges of possession and distribution of heroin.

Drug investigators also intercepted about 47 pounds of heroin on a bus passing through Jackson County on Friday and arrested two California residents on drug charges.
