Medford parolee nabbed near school on meth charges
A Medford man previously involved in a drive-by shooting and on parole for a second-degree rape conviction was arrested Wednesday for allegedly manufacturing methamphetamine near a school. Police say the man, Gabriel Perez, 23, was manufacturing the drug in his home where his 4-year-old son lived.
On Wednesday afternoon, Perez was being held in the Jackson County Jail without bail on charges of delivery, manufacture and possession of methamphetamine, manufacture of methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a school, first-degree child neglect, failure to register as a sex offender and a parole violation.
Medford Area Drug and Gang Enforcement detectives served a search warrant at 7 a.m. at Perez's residence, a duplex in the 2900 block of Stacie Way in Medford. Medford SWAT assisted.
During the search, investigators found 11 grams of methamphetamine, scales and drug records. Perez was living in a room of the duplex with his girlfriend, 18-year-old Mayra Miranda, and their 4-year-old son. The house was within 1,000 feet of Abraham Lincoln Elementary School.
Miranda was cited and released for endangering the welfare of a minor. Oregon Department of Human Services later responded to the scene and placed the child with a family member.
A 15-year-old living in the residence was also arrested and lodged at the Jackson County Juvenile Justice Center on charges of unlawful possession of oxycodone.
MADGE officials alleged Perez, Miranda and the juvenile are members or associates of the Norteños gang.
Perez was in a car during a drive-by shooting that occurred in November 2011 near the intersection of Beall Lane and Circle Wood Drive that severely injured a 22-year-old man. A high-speed chase followed the shooting, ending with a crash in the 8200 block of Old Stage Road. The crash killed a 16-year-old in the car. Perez fled the scene and hitched a ride to Gold Hill before heading to Asante Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass for treatment.
