Eight Medford businesses hit in burglary spree

Burglars broke into eight businesses over a 12-hour period across Medford between Tuesday and Wednesday and swiped money from most of the cash registers before fleeing.

"It's very unusual to have that many burglaries in that amount of time," Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said. "They're all throughout the city. Usually, when we see a group of burglaries, they're in the same general location."

This time, "you basically have the entire city being hit," Budreau said.

The businesses reporting break-ins were:

  • Weldon's Cleaners, 930 N. Phoenix Road;
  • Extreme Juice, 950 N. Phoenix Road;
  • InstaPrint, 26 S. Central Ave.;
  • Rapid Ink, 303 N. Bartlett Ave.;
  • Structures Hair Salon, 311 N. Bartlett Ave.;
  • Mike's Coffee, 924 S. Central Ave.;
  • Senor Sam's, 1234 S. Riverside Ave.;
  • Jackson Creek Pizza, 1590 Delta Waters Road, No. 112.

Police believe the suspects used a crowbar to pry open back doors and windows. In some cases, they broke a glass door or window to get in. Between $50 and $100 was stolen from each cash register, Budreau said.

"There wasn't a lot of money left in the registers overnight," he said.

However, the break-ins caused hundreds of dollars in damage to each business.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department responded to a burglary attempt at Debby's Diner, reported at 5:11 a.m. Wednesday. Sheriff's deputies say grainy surveillance video showed a lone individual prying the door back until glass shattered. The suspect then entered and checked the register before fleeing empty-handed. A description was not available. Police say that event could be added to the list.

"I would certainly think it's going to be related to some if not all of our cases," Budreau said.
