Did you know you can use your electronic book reader at Jackson County libraries?

Learn how to download digital library materials onto your device from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Ashland library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Demonstrations are free.

The Jackson County Sheriff's and Jackson County Health and Human Services departments will talk about how the agencies work together to help the mentally ill.

A presentation on how law enforcement, schools, hospitals and other agencies deal with mental health issues is planned for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Smullin Center on the Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center campus, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford.

"Piecing Together the Mental Illness Puzzle" is part of an informational series sponsored by the sheriff's department.

Last month's presentation focused on gangs.

The classes are free. Organizers warn that real pictures and videos will be used, so attendees should be prepared for explicit language and images.

Ascension Lutheran Church will hold its annual book sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 22, in Medford to benefit the local SMART reading program.

The book sale, which includes thousands of titles, will be at the church, 675 Black Oak Drive. Refreshments will be served.

SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) places adult volunteers in schools to read one-on-one with and to students in kindergarten through third grade.

Locally, the program is serving more than 1,000 students.
