Driver crashes into porch at Ashland B&B
ASHLAND — The sun porch at Anne Hathaway's Bed and Breakfast and Garden Suites took one for the team Monday evening when a pickup truck and its sleeping driver crashed into the East Main Street inn.
No one was hurt in the 9:18 p.m. wreck that also destroyed a fence and took out two trees, but the main house suffered no structural damage, authorities said.
"If the porch hadn't been there, the whole side of the building would have been taken out," owner Dan Runkel said. "The porch saved it.
"It was not a pleasant evening," he said.
Ashland police said the driver, Christopher Jordan Mackey, 23, said he fell asleep behind the wheel of the late 1990s F-150 pickup truck before it careened off the roadway and into the inn. Mackey was cited for reckless driving and criminal mischief at the scene and released, police said.
The room attached to the sun porch was vacant Monday night, but a soloist for the Rogue Valley Symphony Orchestra was scheduled to check in there today, Runkel said.
Runkel said he needs to get the damage repaired quickly because the tourist season in Ashland already is heating up.
