Medford man sentenced to prison for '13 stabbing

A Medford man who stabbed another man in the neck last year in west Medford was sentenced Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court to seven and a half years in prison.

A Jackson County jury this week found Brandon Anthony Borba, 31, guilty of attempted murder and first- and second-degree assault for stabbing then 54-year-old Tamayo C. May in the neck with a knife on March 2, 2013.

The stabbing took place near the intersection of South Columbus Avenue and West Prune Street following a brief conversation between the two men, who did not know each other, police said.

Borba, who maintains his innocence and represented himself in court, told the court he plans to appeal the verdict once he is transferred from the Jackson County Jail to prison.

"I don't feel like I was given adequate counsel. ... I don't feel that I am guilty," said Borba, who did not testify during the trial.

Prior to being charged with attempted murder and assault in this case, Borba's only criminal charges in Jackson County were a pair of possession of controlled substance charges from 2002, Oregon Judicial Department records show.

Jackson County Circuit Judge Timothy Barnack sentenced Borba to 90 months in prison for attempted murder, 90 months for first-degree assault, 70 months for second-degree assault and three years of post-prison supervision and ordered him to pay about $5,287 in restitution. Borba's sentences will be served concurrently, Barnack ruled.

May, who suffered life-threatening injuries in the stabbing, did not attend the sentencing, but sent a letter to prosecutor Virginia Greer, who read it aloud inside the courtroom.

In the letter, May said he still suffers from emotional and mental anxiety related to the stabbing, but forgives Borba for his actions, calling on him to become a productive member of society following his release from prison.

Family members of Borba refused to comment for this story following sentencing.
