Fire on Foots Creek Road near Rogue River destroys garage
A shed fire grew and gutted a nearby garage at a residence in the 2100 block of Foots Creek Road near Rogue River today.
The fire was reported at 11:13 a.m. and crews arrived on scene at 11:27 a.m., dispatch records show.
Fire engines from Rogue River Fire District, Oregon Department of Forestry, Grants Pass Fire Department, and Evans Valley Fire District responded to the incident, records show.
"When we got on scene, the garage was fully involved and there were little explosions going off; it turns out they were little butane cans," said Jeff Fitzgerald, a firefighter with the Rogue River Fire District. "We're not exactly sure what started the fire."
Fitzgerald said the resident tried to douse the outbuilding fire with a garden hose and plow it over with a tractor in an attempt to extinguish the flames, but the blaze spread to the garage.
"He was trying to hit it with a garden hose and realized that the fire was growing too quickly and he ended up finally calling 911," Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald said the structure fire, which didn't damage a home on the property, started a few small spot fires in nearby brush, but those were quickly extinguished.
Mostly tools and a few old vehicles were destroyed in the blaze, Fitzgerald said.
Nobody was injured, he said.
