13 tires slashed in south Medford; police arrest suspect
A Medford man was booked into the Jackson County Jail Sunday after he allegedly slashed 13 tires on 10 cars sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Medford police say Devon Betz, 30, caused $1,400 worth of damage in his suspected spree. The agency alleges he used a pocketknife and slashed the sidewall on the tires of cars parked in the 1500 and 1700 blocks of Whitman Avenue and the 500 block of Barry Circle, just southwest of Fichtner-Mainwaring Park.
Lt. Mike Budreau said a neighbor saw Betz during the night as he leaned down next to a tire. When confronted, Betz walked away to a nearby home. Police spoke to him the next day.
"After he was interviewed, we did determine he was responsible for the crimes," Budreau said.
Betz was arrested on a charge of first-degree criminal mischief. He is no longer listed in the jail.
"It's odd that a subject of his age would go out and do something like this. Usually when we see this type of activity, it's associated with juvenile crime," Budreau said.
